HISTORY

The Barcaldine Pastoral, Agricultural and Horticultural Society formed in 1914 with the first show and President Mr J Cudmore. The recreation reserve was leased from the then Barcaldine Shire Council where an enlarged area was cleared of turkey bush and fenced. A fall of rain a month previous made conditions ideal for Sir Arthur Murgon to opened Barcaldine’s first show where attendance was estimated at over 1,000 with nearly 50 cars arrived from all over the district. Despite the outbreak of war so soon afterwards, Barcaldine shows continued annually until the drought year of 1926. At this time Tom Hannay was show President, and was there until his death 1931, the show was abandoned, this was only the second time since the Society’s inception in 1914 the show was abandoned. (Mrs Isabel Hoch – Barcaldine’s History)

The Barcaldine Show Society has hosted 3 State Sheep Shows with great success. The Barcaldine Show Society Ladies Auxiliary began with ameeting held on the 8th November 1965. The aim of the Auxiliary was to raise funds for the Show Society and to provide equipment, painting, cleaning for the Show Pavilion. Over the many years the Auxiliary have catered for very functions and cattle sales. When the Sheep Pavilon was built, the wool exhibits were moved from the JY Shannon Wool Court on the western side of the pavilion to the JH Paterson Pavilion for more area. I hope this same happy situation will continue. (Mrs JE Paterson 14.11.1997)

Since then the Barcaldine Show has continually been an event on the calendar for Barcaldine and in years to come hopefully it will be.
